Dr Lesley Newhouse-Maiden is an adjunct senior lecturer in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University, Western Australia. Her major research specialisation is curriculum development, and catering for individual differences, particularly as they relate to fostering social equity and excellence in higher education and in schools.
Lesley retired from full-time lecturing in November 2006. However, in 2008, she continued to coordinate a "middle years education" unit for final pre-service secondary teachers. She continues to supervise postgraduate students, to research educational issues, and to evaluate journal articles and theses.
She graduated with a BSc from Durham University in UK in 1960, gaining her MSc in 1972, and her MA in Education in 1978. In 2002, Lesley completed her PhD that was a longitudinal study on women in engineering and engineering education (1992-1999). In the 1960s, Lesley worked in commercial research with ICI in UK; taught science in high schools in UK and Cyprus; and has lectured in teacher education since 1972 in UK and Australia.
Lesley was a member of the 1995 working party that produced a Position Paper related to women in Engineering in Australia. In 2004, she completed on behalf of the Vice Chancellor (ECU) a Position Paper for BHERT on the under representation of women in ICT and, in 2005, a Senate Summit Position Paper on the same topic.
For Michaelmas Term, 2002, she was awarded a prestigious Visiting Fellowship by the Society of Fellows at Durham University, UK.
Carrick Award, November 2006. As a member of the Graduate Diploma in Education (Middle Years) teaching team (2001-2006), who received this prestigious award for teaching excellence in the Social Sciences (Education) category. [Now Australian Learning and Teaching Council]
March 2005. Awarded Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, As a member of the Graduate Diploma in Education (Middle Years) teaching team (2001-2004), who were awarded this prestigious award.
August 2009, accepted as a Fellow of the Western Australian Institute for Educational Research.
November 2009, accepted the inaugural "Distinguished Service Award" by the Middle Schooling Association of Western Australia.
